From the Print Issue A plant engineer can specify a pump with low Nss for extended operation to the left of best efficiency. Or, the engineer can specify a pump with low NPSHr to avoid cavitation to the right of best efficiency. Do you want low suction-specific speed? Or, do you want cavitation resistance? These two designs are mutually exclusive. You can have one, or the other, but not both in one pump with today's technology. The Nss formula can indicate a trade-off for a modest balance of the two features.
MEMS Coriolis Flow Mini Technology Makes Its Move on Industry Coriolis mass flowmeters and resonant densitometers are now being manufactured on silicon microchips. While Coriolis meters have been used in high flowrate industrial fluid monitoring applications for decades, the emergence of micro-miniature Coriolis devices represents a new area of development in the flow measurement category. Latest Headlines What Turndown Means In Terms of FlowrateLast month we discussed how claims of high turndown imply a wide range of flows. (See 'Flowmeter Turndown Overkill' item below.) In particular, a turndown of 1000-to-1 for a magnetic flowmeter implies measurements between velocities of 0.01 and 10 meters per second. However, most applications tend to require turndowns of approximately 10-to-1 or less.
Flowmeter Turndown OverkillI suggest that most flowmeter applications require less than 10-to-1 turndown - although it would be nice to have more. Applications operating at 10 meters per second are not common; so 1000-to-1 turndown is not possible in the overwhelming majority of applications.

2010 Fluid Control Engineering Scholarship ContestASCO Numatics, a manufacturer of fluid automation solutions, flow control, and pneumatics, today announced the beginning of the 2010/2011 academic year application period for two $5,000 scholarships available to U.S. engineering students pursuing careers in industrial automation-related disciplines.
Technology & Application Trends in Level MeasurementIn the areas of accuracy, reliability and ease of use, level measurement technology has evolved significantly from what was available 10-15 years ago. As such, end-users investigating new level systems have an opportunity for a high return on investment if they fully understand the options and employ a methodical and practical specification process.

CO2 Capture to Rise at Double-Digit RatesOperators of coal-fired power plants are committing billions of dollars in expenditures to reduce the quantities of CO2 per kilowatt of power produced, according to a report by McIlvaine Company. These expenditures are accelerating at double-digit rates, as the near-term market for CO2 capture and enhanced oil recovery is on a significant upswing. << Get a FREE Subscription to Flow Control magazine >> New Products
